Grandma's Stacked Apple Cake Recipe
Note: This recipe is a family favorite, passed down from my grandmother. She never measured, but she shared this with me, so now you can enjoy it too! It's perfect for family reunions or any gathering. Feel free to add your own twist, and enjoy the deliciousness!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 slightly beaten egg
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- Approximately 4 tablespoons melted butter
- 2 1/2 cups hot apples (cooked and seasoned) or applesauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 4 cups plain (all-purpose) flour
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
- In a mixing bowl, cream together shortening, sugar, then add the beaten egg and vanilla.
- Sift together the dry ingredients (salt, baking soda, baking powder, and flour).
- Add the dry ingredients alternately with the milk and buttermilk to the creamed mixture, mixing until a soft dough is formed.
- Divide the dough into 6 equal parts.
- Pat each part into the bottom of a well-greased small iron skillet or a 9-inch cake pan.
- Bake for 12 minutes or until the dough is light brown.
- Remove from the pan and brush lightly with melted butter.
- Put the cooked and seasoned hot apples or applesauce between the layers and stack.
- Optionally, brush melted butter between the layers if desired.
