Walnut and Cheese Sables
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup plain flour
- 1/2 cup self-rising flour
- Salt and coarse black pepper, to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
- 2 oz butter, room temperature
- 1 1/2 cups grated cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts
- 3 tablespoons milk
Instructions:
- Prepare Dry Ingredients:
- Sift together plain flour, self-rising flour, salt, black pepper, and chili powder.
- Incorporate Butter:
- Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- Add Cheese and Walnuts:
- Stir in the grated cheddar cheese and finely chopped walnuts, ensuring an even distribution.
- Form Dough:
- Add the milk and mix until it forms a stiff dough.
- Chill and Shape:
- Chill the dough for 30 minutes.
- Roll the chilled dough into a small log on a floured board.
- Cut into 1/4-inch rounds.
- Bake:
- Place the rounds on a greased baking tray or lined with greaseproof paper.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C/350°F for approximately 14-15 minutes or until slightly brown.
- Cool and Serve:
- Allow the sables to cool before serving.
Tips:
- For a richer flavor, consider using aged cheddar cheese.
- Experiment with different types of nuts for a unique twist.
