Keep This for the Holidays

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 pound of chopped pecans
  • 1/2 pound of chopped walnuts
  • 2-3 tablespoons of ground cinnamon
  • 1 pound package of Phyllo dough
  • 1-1/2 cups of melted butter
  • 2-1/2 cups of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon of grated lemon zest

Instructions:

  1. Start by mixing the nuts in a large bowl, tossing them with ground cinnamon. Set this mixture aside.
  2. Butter a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  3. Place two sheets of Phyllo in the bottom of the prepared dish, and generously brush them with melted butter.
  4. Scatter 2-3 tablespoons of the nut mixture over the top. Continue to repeat these layers until all the nuts, butter, and Phyllo have been used.
  5. Finish with about six layers of Phyllo on the top. If you have any remaining butter, brush it over the top layer.
  6. Use a very sharp knife to cut through all layers of the baklava. Initially, cut 3-4 slices lengthwise, and then make diagonal cuts to create diamond shapes.Christmas Baklava
  7. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for approximately 45 minutes or until it turns golden and crisp.
  8. While the baklava is baking, heat the honey in a saucepan until it's close to boiling. Stir in the vanilla and lemon zest.
  9. When the baklava is finished baking, immediately pour the honey mixture over the top.
  10. Let it cool completely in the pan. Enjoy this festive treat during the holidays!
