Military SOS recipe

Military SOS

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 cubes chicken bouillon, crumbled
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (unbleached)
  • 1 1/2 cups low-fat milk

Instructions:

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Stir in the ground beef, chicken bouillon, garlic powder, black pepper, and onion powder.
  3. Cook and stir until the beef is crumbly, evenly browned, and no longer pink, about 7 minutes.
  4. Stir in the flour and cook for 3 minutes, stirring constantly.
  5. Stir in the milk and bring to a simmer, stirring constantly.
  6. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 5 minutes to thicken.
  7. Serve over toast (Shingles) or biscuits, hashed browns, tater-tots, eggs, rice, or any other preferred accompaniment.
  8. Enjoy!

Creamed Chipped Beef Gravy:

Creamed Chipped Beef Gravy

Ingredients:

  • Melted butter
  • Bacon grease (optional)
  • Cut-up dried beef
  • Milk
  • Toast slices
  • Leftover redskin mashed potatoes (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Heat a cast-iron skillet and add melted butter. If desired, add a small amount of bacon grease for additional flavor.
  2. Add the cut-up dried beef to the skillet and sauté it for a few minutes.
  3. Gradually stir in milk until you reach the desired thickness for the gravy.
  4. Toast slices of bread.
  5. Serve the creamed chipped beef gravy over the toast slices.
  6. Optionally, heat up leftover redskin mashed potatoes and top them with some of the gravy.
  7. Enjoy this easy and delicious meal!

SOS over Mashed Potatoes

SOS over Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients:

  • 2-2 1/2 lbs Ground Beef
  • Salt (To Taste)
  • Pepper (To Taste)
  • 1/4 Cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 4 Cups Milk (As Needed)
  • 8 Russet Potatoes (Peeled and Cubed)
  • 6 Tablespoons Butter

Directions:

  1. Place the peeled and cubed potatoes into a large pot and cover with salted water. Bring to a boil and cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, usually around 15-20 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until browned, which usually takes about 8-10 minutes. Season the beef with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Slowly mix in the all-purpose flour, stirring continuously. Cook and stir for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add the milk to the skillet, stirring to combine all the ingredients. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the mixture reaches the desired thickness. If needed, add more milk to achieve the desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Drain the cooked potatoes. Add the butter to the drained potatoes. Mash the potatoes using a potato masher until smooth, adding milk as needed to reach the desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Serve the mashed potatoes with the beef gravy poured over the top.
  7. Enjoy your delicious SOS over Mashed Potatoes!
